Latest attack hits election integrity bill

As we approach the May 28th Republican Primary Runoff in Denton and Wise Counties, the lies from my opponent and the organizations backing his campaign have increased tenfold. The most recent text message claims I voted to suppress free speech on gun rights. Once again, my opponent and his supporters are lying about legislation and twisting the facts to fit their false narrative.

It's critical to clarify the facts around HB 1585—a bill I supported to strengthen our election processes. This legislation aims to increase transparency and accountability, ensuring that every voice in Texas is heard clearly and accurately.

  • HB 1585 revises Texas campaign finance laws to regard communications that clearly support or oppose legislation or legislators as political advertising. This change is designed to make it clear who is behind political messages, aiding voters in making informed decisions. It ensures that external influences, especially those funded from outside Texas, disclose their involvement in our elections, thus maintaining the integrity of our political discourse.

  • This bill simplifies the campaign finance system by updating how contributions and expenditures are reported. By adjusting the threshold for mandatory campaign treasurer appointments to contributions or expenditures over $500, HB 1585 makes it easier for small, local campaigns to participate in the political process without the burden of excessive reporting requirements.

  • Contrary to the misleading attacks from my opponent, HB 1585 does not suppress free speech on any topic, including gun rights. The bill's focus is on transparency and accountability, ensuring that all political advertising is recognized and recorded as such, regardless of the subject matter.

  • HB 1585 also targets deceptive practices by requiring clear disclosures about who benefits from political expenditures. This is crucial to prevent organizations influenced by out-of-state interests, like those funded by George Soros, from distorting the truth about Texas laws and policies.

As your representative, I am committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and transparency. HB 1585 is a step forward in ensuring that our election laws reflect these values. I urge the voters of Denton and Wise Counties to support this move towards a more accountable and open government. Let us stand together for a Texas that values the truth and protects the rights of every voter.

Vote for me, Dr. Lynn Stucky, on May 28th—A Champion for Integrity in Texas Politics.

This blog format aims to be more accessible and informative, helping you understand the importance of HB 1585 in safeguarding our democratic systems, and I hope it helps clarify any confusion surrounding the bill's intent and impact.
