Supporting Priority Water Resource Policy for HD 64
As your Texas State Representative, I have always prioritized the well-being and future prosperity of our communities in Denton and Wise Counties. One of the most critical issues we face today is ensuring a sustainable and reliable water supply. This past legislative session, I worked diligently with my fellow lawmakers to support and implement priority water resource policies that will safeguard our water resources for generations to come.
The Texas Water Fund
A major milestone achieved in 2023 was the creation of the Texas Water Fund through Proposition 6, which was overwhelmingly approved by 77% of Texas voters. This initiative marks a significant step forward, with an initial investment of $1 billion dedicated to addressing the future water needs of our state, particularly in fast-growing areas like ours.
The Texas Water Fund is designed to finance innovative water supply projects, such as wastewater reuse and stormwater management. By offering low-cost, flexible financing options, the fund enables smaller communities to undertake vital water and wastewater projects that might otherwise be financially out of reach. This is a crucial development for Denton and Wise Counties, as it opens up new opportunities for improving our water infrastructure and ensuring long-term sustainability.
Programs Available to Wise County Communities
In addition to the Texas Water Fund, several other programs are available to support our water needs in Wise County:
-
This program provides financial assistance for planning, acquisition, design, and construction of water quality improvement projects, including wastewater treatment and nonpoint source pollution control. It is a vital tool for addressing wastewater management and pollution reduction in our communities.
-
While primarily focused on drinking water systems, the DWSRF also supports wastewater and drainage projects, particularly where they intersect with the protection of drinking water sources.
-
Focusing on small rural utilities, the RWAF offers low-cost financing for water and wastewater projects. This program is crucial for smaller communities and rural areas in Wise County, helping to establish and improve essential water infrastructure.
-
SWIFT supports projects included in the state water plan, offering low-cost financing options to help communities implement strategies for securing water supplies. This includes improving wastewater treatment and managing stormwater.
-
TWDF provides financial assistance for water supply, water quality, and flood control projects, including loans and grants for planning, acquisition, and construction of wastewater and drainage facilities.
Our Successes and Future Prospects
The successes we have achieved in supporting priority water resource policies are a testament to the collective effort and commitment of our community and state leadership. By securing significant funding and establishing robust programs, we are well-equipped to tackle the water challenges of today and tomorrow.
These initiatives are not just about immediate improvements; they are about laying a strong foundation for future growth and resilience. Ensuring a reliable water supply is essential for the health, economy, and overall quality of life in Denton and Wise Counties. As we move forward, I remain dedicated to advocating for policies and programs that will continue to deliver solutions to this vital issue.
Together, we are building a sustainable future for our communities. Thank you for your support and for entrusting me with the responsibility to serve and advocate for you in the Texas Legislature.
